Human Transport Inertial Measurement Unit
Commercial Sensor Assembly At the heart of the Segway™ Human Transport is an Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU). µPD was tasked with assisting in cost reduction, power minimization, and interconnect definition to the rest of the system. We worked closely with the Segway™ engineering team to redesign the circuitry to include two microcomputers, which eliminated many discrete components, and to redesign the interfaces. The Segway™/µPD team then prototyped the unit, wrote firmware and verified the prototype design. Finally the design was transferred to Silicon Sensing Systems, who supplied the gyroscopes and mechanical hardware, for contract manufacturing.
